Expanding its reach, Mozilla touts Firefox OS apps running on Android ? Tech News and Analysis
The OnePlus One (picture: Ewan Spence) OnePlus has resisted the temptation to load up the One withany excess software. The core apps for the Google experience are here, as are the core apps for a smartphone experience. Theres no duplication of application functionality here. You get the stock Android apps out of the box, and just a few additions to help you live. One of those additions is the torch app, which you can activate with a touch-baseshortcut on the screen when the OnePlus One is on stand-by, or idling on the lock screen. Draw a quick V on the screen and thecamera LED will turn on like a touch. You can also draw a circle to activate the camera, or a two fingered swipe to play or pauseyour music.

HPs Martin Fink shows a mock-up of a memristor module at an HP conference in Las Vegas. Today, all our devicesfrom phone to supercomputerconstantly shuttle information between three layers of memory: whats needed this instant (SRAM), what will be needed very soon (DRAM) and what may be needed later (storage), HP said on its website. Memristors will be fast, dense and cheap enough to play both the soon and later roles at once, and thereby speed up throughput by eliminating most of the to and fro, it said. How dense? We want you to be able to store your entire life; think of 100 terabytes on your smartphone, Fink said.

When Mozilla first started what is today called Firefox OS, it was actually implemented as Boot 2 Gecko on a few select Android handsets. Like Android, it runs on a Linux kernel as well. Ironically, its also similar to Googles Chrome OS as it too runs a web-based environment atop Linux. Will hordes of Android owners rush to install Firefox OS apps on their Android phone? Not likely, but I dont see Mozillas effort here as way to try and accomplish that.
